Technology Showcase Comes to North Dakota2008 tour hosted at Peterson Farms Seed will include demonstrations of cutting edge technology in a “real field” atmosphere.
June 26, 2008 -- With assistance of the agronomic crew at Peterson Farms Seed, the Monsanto sponsored stress-mitigation tent will be erected on June 26th. Peterson Farms Seed has been selected this season as the site of one of Monsanto’s stress-mitigation tents, bringing this cutting edge biotech research to the northern plains for the first time.
Planted the second week of May, the test site at Peterson Farms Seed will include untreated plants, plants treated with soil insecticides and YieldGard® VT Triple hybrids to demonstrate performance under environmental and pest stress situations. A large tent measuring 40 by 66 feet sitting 13 feet off the ground is being erected to cover the test plot. The tent has a clear vinyl top so the plants can receive sunlight and heat, but remain sheltered from rainfall.
The Peterson Farms Seed site is the ideal spot to test the value of corn rootworm as it has been corn-on-corn for the past five years. NDSU entomologist, Mark Boettel, called it “Rootworm Heaven” when he examined the field last fall.
Growers from around the area will have a unique opportunity to see tomorrow’s technology today in the 2008 Technology Showcase Tour. The tour, which will be held at Peterson Farms Seed in Harwood, ND, will display the latest technological advancements in agriculture. Featured will be:
1. New Traits for 2009
Hear about the exciting new traits for next year, including Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ soybeans and YieldGard VT Triple® Pro corn.
2. Nitrogen Use Efficiency
Genetic improvement in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is a compelling strategy for enhancing yield, as well as nitrogen management in corn. Monsanto is making efforts in breeding to lead to better nitrogen uptake and utilization. Learn about the ongoing NUE research!
3. Stress Mitigation
Environmental stressors could have a great negative impact on field crops. Watch a demonstration of a plant’s ability to better tolerate environmental and biotech stresses through the use of biotech traits, and see results from soil probe analysis of water use.
The Stress Mitigation Tent is part of Peterson Farms Seed’s annual Grower Day, a larger educational event. All regional growers are invited to attend this event held at Peterson Farms Seed on July 31st from noon to 6pm. The day will include an advanced corn clinic led by expert agronomist, John McGullicuddy, as well as many other corn and soybean studies. Growers are welcome to come and go as they please and to pick and choose from a number of educational stations. For more information, call 866-481-7333 or visit www.PetersonFarmsSeed.com.
